Qantas Names Vanessa Hudson New CEO, Replaces Joyce
Big changes are happening in Qantas management. The CEO is retiring. Another Qantas executive will take over.
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce To Retire 2023
Alan Joyce is leaving Qantas in November 2023. He's been the CEO for 15 years. That's a long time for a CEO in this industry. Normally, they don't stay that long. Joyce was meant to retire when the pandemic started. But the board asked him to stay on.
Richard Goyder, the chairman of Qantas, talked about Joyce's retirement.
Alan deserves a lot of credit for Qantas' promising future. As CEO, he's tackled many tough challenges along the way. He's handled situations like the GFC, high oil prices, fierce competition, and the COVID pandemic with impressive skill.
The company was changed because of some unexpected issues. Alan guided the company to lots of profits. He supervised the purchase of planes and lounges. Also, he established Jetstar and worked with Emirates. Alan created new things, including the route from Perth to London and Project Sunrise.
Alan led a very committed team for success of national carrier. His successor was selected from that team.
In my opinion, people are divided on Joyce's legacy at the airline. Some view his work positively, while others see it negatively.
Joyce is good at managing the airline in a careful and safe way. The company has gone through tough times, but Joyce did a good job leading it. Joyce did some cool things too, like starting flights from Perth to London without stopping, getting new Airbus A350 planes for the longest flights ever, and updating the smaller planes.
Joyce's approach to labor relations stands out to me. He sees staff as easily replaceable and has made harsh labor cuts such as outsourcing and contract hires.
Qantas' reputation in Australia has gotten worse during the pandemic. People don't love it as much as they used to. This isn't only happening in Australia, though. Other airlines are having the same problem.
Qantas Appoints Vanessa Hudson As New CEO
Vanessa Hudson will become the new Qantas CEO from November 2023. She will replace Alan Joyce. She's currently the Chief Financial Officer for Qantas Group. Hudson has worked in the group for more than 28 years. She's also been the Chief Customer Officer and SVP for the Americas and New Zealand.
Richard Goyder is the Qantas Chairman. Hudson was appointed. Goyder made a statement.
Vanessa knows this business well with almost 30 years of experience. She worked in different roles onshore and offshore. Vanessa dealt with commercial, customer, and finance. She knows a lot about airlines and is an excellent leader.
Vanessa helped make our strategy for five years. She did a great job with finance and treasury during COVID. She picked which planes to get for the next ten years.
Qantas has many talented people. Vanessa has lots of support from other executives and the Board. This is one of Qantas' strengths.
Congratulations to Hudson on her new job! Things will likely continue the same way at Qantas, and she probably won't make big changes. She seems like a safe choice since she's been at Qantas for a long time and has worked with Joyce.
It's cool to think of a CEO who has new ideas and comes from outside, but Qantas is in the middle of a big change. They're replacing their narrow planes and getting new ones soon. The CEO will have lots to do to make sure that all goes well.
Alan Joyce, Qantas's current CEO, is retiring after 15 years. A new CEO, Vanessa Hudson, will replace him. Hudson is currently the CFO and has been working at Qantas for many years. Congrats to her on becoming CEO. It's awesome to see more women leading airlines.
I believe Qantas will stick to its current path. So, I think she's a good option.
