Last week, I saw ASL in a private briefing before the official release on May 30. Other analysts saw it too.

What is ASL and how is it different from previous data lakes and log management systems?

ASL can collect security data from various sources and store it in an AWS account. It's a service that's fully managed and can do this automatically. These sources include AWS environments, on-premises data centers, cloud providers, SaaS providers, and others. The data is stored in a data lake.

ASL is stored on AWS using S3 buckets. This could be a big step in cybersecurity data management and analytics. The ASL could bring about improvements. Six possible improvements are:

When ASL was announced, Amazon said two things: 1) it's not a SIEM service, it's for managing data and logs, so you have to bring your own security analytics; and 2) customers own their own data, and Amazon won't use it for its own data mining or models.

ASL isn't like SIEM or public data repositories. It's a security data lake. It's cheap, strong, and can be expanded. These advancements are noteworthy.
