BlackBerry's Latest Research Reveals Manufacturers are Growing Increasingly Cautious of Threats from Nation States.

Most of the manufacturers feel that their surroundings are challenging to protect. Additionally, a significant majority of 86% confess that their manufacturing functions are operating on outdated and unsupported legacy operating systems.

BlackBerry Limited, a company based in Germany, has recently published their study on cybersecurity in manufacturing at Hannover Messe. The study reveals that the use of outdated and unsupported legacy operational technologies (OT) puts manufacturers at risk of cyber attacks from nation-states. The vulnerability in the system must be addressed to ensure the safety and security of the manufacturing process.

A survey was conducted amongst 1,500 manufacturing IT decision makers from different countries including North America, UK, Germany, Japan, and Australia. The results of the survey showed that 41% believe that there is a higher chance of cyberattacks in 2023. Additionally, 75% of those surveyed are concerned about nation-state attacks on the manufacturing sector, whereas 65% worry about foreign governments spying on their facilities. The survey also revealed that 68% are having difficulties in defending their OT infrastructure. Furthermore, 86% admitted that they are still using outdated and unsupported legacy operating systems for their core functions.

The Chief Technology Officer of Cybersecurity at BlackBerry, Shishir Singh, has pointed out that businesses in the manufacturing field may be facing some tough times ahead due to the threat of cyber attacks from nation states. This risk is only increasing, yet the industry is facing obstacles with outdated security measures that are proving difficult to protect. Throughout the past 12 months, there have been three major trends in cybersecurity that have affected the infrastructure of both OT and IoT, which are ransomware and phishing attacks, as well as software vulnerabilities coming from third-parties.

The advancement of cybersecurity is now a hurdle for progress. Old equipment and outdated operating systems make it tough for managers to combine security measures for modernization. As equipment becomes isolated and aged, it becomes a challenge to protect these environments. However, with the help of a lightweight solution that is compatible with various operating systems, we can strengthen security measures for all endpoints and minimize the risk of exposure across manufacturing infrastructure.

According to a study conducted by BlackBerry, the primary worry of global IT decision-makers in the manufacturing industry is related to harmful malware attacks, reaching a percentage of 56%. In second place comes phishing attacks, at 49%, and non-malicious insiders unauthorized access ranks third with 45%. This data suggests that manufacturing companies are more concerned about nation-state threats that aim at causing disruption and unexpected downtime instead of aiming for ransom payments.

According to recent research, 65% of those in charge of IT decisions in manufacturing believe that a cyber breach would cost $250,000 or less. Half of the respondents suggested that business downtime would only make up a small part of this cost. However, over 60% acknowledged that a cyber incident could result in a loss of customers or damage supplier relationships. This contrasts with a different report which suggests that the true cost of a data breach in the industrial sector is actually over 16 times greater at $4.24M, especially when considering the rising costs of unplanned downtime and higher production demands.
