Texas has been enduring a scorching heatwave for a fortnight, witnessing record-breaking triple-digit temperatures on a daily basis across extensive areas of the state. Yet, it's not only the thermometer readings that are smashing records in the great state of Texas.

The organization in charge of overseeing the majority of Texas' power grid, known as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas or ERCOT, has announced that there were new and unprecedented levels of electricity usage during the month, as well as the record-breaking total amount of electricity consumed. This surge in demand can be attributed to the continuous operation of air conditioners due to the intense heat in Texas, with residents making an effort to combat the high temperatures.

ERCOT stated that the highest power consumption in June was observed last year, specifically on June 23, with a total of 76,681 megawatts utilized. Nevertheless, this previous record was surpassed on Tuesday as electricity usage hit a peak of 80,828 megawatts.

This number not only surpasses the highest power demand in June, but it also surpasses the highest power demand ever recorded on the ERCOT power grid. Previously, this record was achieved on July 20, 2022, with a total consumption of 80,148 megawatts in a single day. In other words, this new record was achieved approximately three weeks before the previous all-time high.

At least nine fatalities have been recorded in a Texas neighborhood amid scorching temperatures.

However, ERCOT states that the data collected on Tuesday is still in the preliminary stage, meaning that the record-breaking figure is not yet officially confirmed.

According to an ERCOT representative, the official requests for information will not be verified until the settlements/data are completed, a process that may require several days.

During the spring season, ERCOT and the Texas Public Utility Commission cautioned individuals about a potential deficit of "instantly available energy," which refers to power that can be activated quickly, particularly under challenging summer circumstances.

According to Peter Lake, the ex-chairman of the PUC, the data reveals something quite significant: this summer's electricity demand will surpass the generation capacity of our on-demand dispatchable power for the very first time.

TIPS FOR VIEWING FOX WEATHER

The power providers in Texas are well acquainted with having their systems tested beyond limits by severe climate conditions.

In the year 2021, an intense winter storm severely damaged the state's power system, rendering countless Texans without electricity for several days amidst extremely frigid weather that hadn't been experienced in ten years.
