Neuralink Approved For Human Study
Elon Musk's brain-implant firm, Neuralink, got approval from the FDA to start its first in-human clinical trial. It's a major achievement after having trouble getting approval before.
Musk said four times since 2019 that his medical device firm will try out its brain implant on humans. The implant aims to help people with paralysis and blindness.
The company was founded in 2016. They just asked for FDA approval in 2022. The agency said no. This information came from seven current and former employees talking to Reuters in March.
Neuralink employees said that the FDA had given them a list of concerns. The ones on the list included the battery and wires of the implant moving around in the brain. The FDA also wanted to know how the device could safely be removed without hurting the brain. The FDA wants these problems solved before giving the green light for human tests.
FDA gave approval on Thursday. Lawmakers in the US want regulators to investigate. They want to know if the people on a panel for animal testing at Neuralink were responsible for the bad experiments. They think the experiments were rushed.
The government has investigated Neuralink before.
In 2020, the USDA inspector general checked for Animal Welfare Act violations. They did that because a federal prosecutor wanted them to. This Act governs how scientists test and treat specific animals. Since 2018, the company killed 1,500 animals. Reuters said 280 of those were sheep, pigs, and monkeys used in experiments.
The investigation includes studying how the USDA monitors Neuralink.
Neuralink said in a tweet that it's not ready for clinical trials yet.
