Q1-2023 Sees 54% Drop In VR Headset Sales

In the first quarter of the year, shipments of reality headsets dropped a lot. This happened even though Sony released PSVR 2 for their popular PlayStation 5. People were also excited about Apple's AR/VR cases, but that didn't help with sales.

The new Quest 3 could boost the VR market, but we can't say for certain. The market has been decreasing for months and a report from IDC shows a big drop in shipments for the first quarter of 2023 - down 54.4%.

Meta is still the top AR/VR headset maker with a lot of market share, around 47.8%. Sony did pretty well too, with 35.9% from their PSVR 2 headset. But, we need to remember that PSVR 2 wasn't super popular- it was kind of low in sales.

ByteDance (Pico) did well this year with new products and markets, getting 6.1%. DPVR and HTC also did OK but got less than 2% each.

Apple is possibly the new solution for VR. People might lose interest in VR as time passes and the PSVR 2 novelty wears off. Apple will present its VR glasses soon.

The rumors say that it won't be for everyone. It will be a fancy item for testing.

Virtual reality has a problem: there are different opinions. Some think it should be exclusive. Others want it to be for everyone. The ones for everyone are not as good technically.

Right now, there are two trends. But, the market needs something to make buying these gadgets worth it. They need to be more than just cool tech.
