Virginia Gambling Scene Explodes as Sports Betting Investments Soar 10% in July
In the past few years, there has been an extraordinary growth in the gambling industry in Virginia. Different types of gambling activities have become increasingly popular and have resulted in significant profits. Starting from 2019, the range of gambling options in the state has expanded to include historical horse racing machines, sports betting, and fully equipped casinos, offering more choices for those who enjoy gambling.
Virginia's gambling industry has seen a remarkable rise with the latest additions. A prime example of this is the significant increase in sports betting. In just the month of July, Virginians poured a staggering $293 million into the 14 licensed sports betting platforms available in the state. Astonishingly, this amount marks a noteworthy growth of more than 10% compared to the numbers recorded during the same period last year.
Providing his thoughts on the issue, Andrew Champagne, responsible for managing gaming affairs as the content manager for the Play Virginia website, painted an optimistic view. Champagne pointed out that while the July figures may appear small compared to the impressive numbers seen in January, February, and March, a 10% rise in both the handle and the resulting revenue is a notable indication of advancement for any market.
Champagne showed a keen interest in the developments happening in Virginia after North Carolina's expected launch of sports betting in the upcoming year. He also displayed curiosity about the ongoing expansion of casino gambling in Virginia, especially with the addition of new establishments like the Danville and Bristol casinos. Champagne eagerly awaits the opening of Norfolk's casino, once it successfully tackles the administrative obstacles in its way.
When the Danville casino first opened, it rapidly became a significant source of income, noted Champagne. He believes that the Norfolk casino will follow a similar path once it starts operating. Moreover, he is particularly interested in the upcoming election in November in Richmond, which may approve the creation of a casino in the capital city.
Nevertheless, the fate of a particular type of gambling remains undetermined - games of skill that can often be found in numerous convenience stores, truck stops, and other establishments throughout the state. The future of these games hangs in the balance as a legal case challenging the state's ban on skill games is currently underway, and the outcome will likely be revealed during the trial scheduled for December.
