Thousands of Twitter users report problems accessing site as Elon Musk says new limits have been installed
On Saturday, an immense number of Twitter users encountered difficulties when trying to access the popular social media platform. Coincidentally, Elon Musk took to his own Twitter account and announced that he will be imposing a cap on the number of tweets users are able to view within a single day.
On Saturday afternoon, Musk posted a tweet stating that verified accounts have a cap of 6,000 posts per day that they can peruse. However, for unverified accounts, this limit is significantly reduced to just 600 posts daily. As for new unverified users, their access is further restricted to a mere 300 posts per day.
In a recent announcement, he mentioned that the limitations on rates would soon experience an upward adjustment, reaching 8,000 for verified users, 800 for unverified users, and 400 for newly registered unverified individuals.
Musk mentioned in his initial tweet that the modification is only for a limited time and was implemented to tackle the excessive extraction of data and manipulation of the system. This occurrence marks the most recent widespread service disruption since he took ownership of the online platform towards the end of the previous year.
A large number of individuals who attempted to reach or share information on Twitter's website or mobile application encountered an error message saying either "Rate limit exceeded" or "Cannot retrieve tweets." By 11 a.m. ET, over 7,300 individuals had reported problems with Twitter to the Downdetector website.
Twitter replied to CNBC's comment request with its typical pile of excrement emoji.
Twitter has been experiencing technical issues in the past few months, and Saturday's outage is just the latest incident. Back in February, users faced a 90-minute period where they were unable to post on the platform due to a message stating they had reached their daily tweet limit. In March, users also encountered a temporary problem where they couldn't click on links or load images.
Additional service disruptions occurred simultaneously with the news of a Twitter's data center shutting down and a significant reduction in their workforce, which Musk argued were crucial for the company's financial stability.
