All-New 2024 Volkswagen Passat Digitally Morphs Into the Sedan That'll Never Be

Volkswagen Passat

The Passat holds great significance for Volkswagen, specifically in North America where it bid farewell to their lineup. In case you missed it, there is now a brand-new iteration of this beloved mid-size vehicle, but with a twist – it can only be found in the form of a station wagon.

Introduced just a few days ago, the freshly launched 2024 VW Passat is built on a well-known framework. It utilizes the MQB Evo platform, which is also used in popular vehicles like the Golf Mk8, Audi A3, Skoda Octavia, Cupra Formentor, and more. With a slightly elongated wheelbase, increasing by 2 inches (50 mm) compared to its previous version, and a visually striking design, it might deceive some observers into believing it's an electric car.

Keep in mind that, although the appearance of the new Passat may be somewhat divisive (let's hope we develop a liking for the design), it doesn't come with a completely silent powertrain, as that would have been redundant with the ID. 7 model. Instead, it offers two options for plug-in hybrid systems that can provide a range of up to 62 miles (100 km) on electric power alone in the most economical version. Additionally, it offers a mild-hybrid unit, two petrol engines, and three turbocharged diesel engines.

As you might already assume, this vehicle comes fully equipped with all the extras necessary for a contemporary, family-friendly car. Therefore, you can expect features like seat massage capabilities in addition to seat heating and cooling, a multi-zone climate control system, a sizable 15-inch infotainment screen, a 12.9-inch digital display for all your driving information, and a wide range of safety features such as lane assistance, recognizing traffic signs, automatic braking, and much more.

There may be those who argue that the new Passat lacks any attractiveness, but conversely, this vehicle has consistently been targeted towards individuals who are unconcerned with fashion and aesthetics. Consequently, it is likely to be a lucrative product. We believe it will be highly popular among drivers who offer ride-sharing services and individuals who remain convinced that a crossover is unnecessary in their lifestyles. Deep down, we might have hoped that they would also produce a sedan model, but it was already widely known well in advance of the official presentation that it would solely be available as an estate.

Not surprisingly, some artists have started imagining how the new-generation Passat would appear as a four-door version. The image above was shared on Facebook by X-Tomi. It remains faithful to the car's overall design, but with a shorter roof, smaller windows on the sides, redesigned rear fenders, and a smaller trunk opening leading to a smaller cargo space compared to the wagon version. The artist did not make any other changes to the image, even keeping the same wheels as the real car. It's a shame it's not real, right? So, would you like Volkswagen to bring the new Passat to the United States, or do you think it's better without it?
