French air traffic controllers threaten Rugby World Cup walkouts | Travel Weekly

Strike action

Airlines are set to experience new obstacles as the biggest air traffic controllers' association in France has announced their intention to strike during the Rugby World Cup taking place in the nation.

According to local news outlets, the SNCTA union has reportedly urged employees to engage in countrywide strikes on two Fridays - September 15 and October 13.

The initial strike will align with the Rugby World Cup, which is expected to attract a multitude of individuals to France.

The measure has the potential to cause many flight cancellations and affect flights from various nations that pass over the skies of France.

The alliance expressed disapproval towards the lack of response from the civil aviation authority (Direction générale de l’Aviation civile, DGAC) in light of escalating inflation.

French air traffic controllers went on strike several times this year, causing a significant number of flights to be canceled. The first strike wave occurred in January, which was then followed by additional strikes in March and June.

Employees of the Paris Metro system have also expressed their intention to go on strike during the Rugby World Cup, which will take place from September 8 to October 28.

While train operators will be given a bonus as a way to acknowledge their additional services during the event, no extra compensation has been proposed for station employees.

Workers from the public transport sector in Paris, who are represented by the FO-RATP trade union, have indicated their intention to strike due to this matter. Current discussions to reach an agreement are in progress.
