The largest cities in the world vary depending on the criteria you employ.

By the conclusion of 2022, the overall world populace has reached a staggering eight billion individuals, with over half of this vast number residing in urban areas.

Visual Capitalist compiled data from the most recent official censuses and forecasts to determine the ranking of the world's biggest cities in terms of population, utilizing three commonly used metrics. These metrics include city proper, which calculates a city's population based on its administrative boundaries; urban area, which considers cities as connected and continuous built-up areas; and metropolitan area, which resembles urban areas but is typically defined by recognized authorities.
