Qantas CEO Alan Joyce will leave the company sooner than planned due to increasing controversies.

Mr. Joyce was scheduled to depart in November, concluding his 15-year tenure as CEO. However, he will now step down from his position without delay.

He explained that the recent focus on "historical occurrences" has made it evident that this is "the most optimal action" he could take.

The airline has become the target of increasing public outrage following its tremendous earnings despite a string of controversies.

Over the course of the previous couple of years, it has encountered a multitude of backlash due to its pricey flight charges, numerous instances of delayed or canceled flights, and the way it treats its employees.

On Thursday, the Australian Consumer Commission (ACCC), which is responsible for protecting consumer rights in Australia, revealed that it is pursuing a legal case against the airline due to claims that it had sold tickets for over 8,000 flights that were later cancelled.

The legal dispute implies that the airline company is currently being sued in three different cases.

Additionally, it is contesting a decision that accuses it of unlawfully subcontracting numerous job positions amidst the pandemic, as well as facing a collective lawsuit filed by customers regarding its rigid flight credit system.

Some groups, including certain members of parliament, are pressuring shareholders to reject Mr. Joyce's compensation plan.

On Tuesday, Mr. Joyce expressed his satisfaction about his tenure at Qantas, highlighting numerous accomplishments. However, he emphasized the necessity for the company to prioritize its rejuvenation and progress.

"He expressed that there have been numerous highs and lows, and it is evident that there is still a significant amount of work that needs to be accomplished, particularly in guaranteeing consistent satisfaction for our clientele. However, as he departs, he holds the belief that the company possesses a solid foundation and a promising future ahead," he commented.

Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder expressed his admiration for Mr. Joyce, mentioning that he has consistently prioritized the welfare of Qantas and today's events validate that sentiment.

This change occurs during a clearly difficult period for both Qantas and its employees. We possess a crucial responsibility to regain the trust and faith of the public in our organization's values and principles.

Upon the announcement of her appointment in May, Vanessa Hudson, the incoming CEO, emphasized that her utmost focus would be on rebuilding the airline's standing.

Once serving as the Chief Financial Officer, Ms. Hudson is set to take on the role of Qantas' inaugural female leader starting Wednesday.
