ATS White Paper tackles fleet misconceptions around EV adoption
Mark Salisbury June 29, 2023
ATS Euromaster has released a fresh White Paper to debunk the various false beliefs and misunderstandings surrounding electric vehicles in fleet usage.
ATS Euromaster has launched a blog series called EV Mythbusters, where they have sought the opinions of industry experts to offer a more well-rounded outlook on the adoption of electric vehicles within the fleet industry. This initiative comes as the sector experiences steady growth.
According to the most recent leasing report released by the BVRLA, the leasing fleet has experienced a slight growth despite the limited availability of vehicles. The overall increase is approximately 0.3%. However, the growth can be attributed to the rise in business contract hire, which has increased by 4% compared to the previous year, and salary sacrifice, which has seen a significant increase of 34% year on year. Fleet sales have also played a crucial role in this growth, showing a considerable rise of 39% compared to the previous year.
More than half, specifically 53%, of the newly acquired cars for business contract hire were electric vehicles. Despite this positive trend, various media platforms still persistently promote a negative image towards EVs, leading to widespread misconceptions regarding their compatibility with fleet usage.
Nevertheless, according to the tire and upkeep company, this does not imply that fleet supervisors and motorists can effortlessly trade traditional combustion engines for electric vehicles without altering their methods of fleet management and driving.
"We are completely behind the shift towards electrification, but currently there seems to be a significant amount of misunderstanding being spread. This document brings attention to the false beliefs surrounding the suitability of electric vehicles, such as concerns about battery wear and the feasibility of using electric power for commercial vehicles," stated Jason Chamberlain, sales director at ATS Euromaster.
"We are not implying that transitioning to electric fleets is a simple undertaking, and it will necessitate a fresh perspective from both fleet administrators and operators," Jason stated. "However, it is not an unconquerable challenge, and many of the anecdotes surrounding electric vehicles are either ill-informed or entirely fabricated. This White Paper aids in rectifying the prevailing discourse."
The individuals who have made contributions to the White Paper include Dr Euan McTurk, who is an esteemed Consultant specializing in Battery Electrochemistry at Plug Life Consulting. Also, we have Paul Kirby, a highly knowledgeable expert in the field of electric Light Commercial Vehicles (eLCVs) from EV Essentials. Lastly, we have Philip Nothard, who holds the position of Director in Insight & Strategy at Cox Automotive.
The blog section provides an insightful analysis of the misconceptions surrounding service, maintenance, and repair (SMR), battery decline, the suitability of commercial vehicle fleets, and the residual values of electric vehicles (EVs). It aims to address the numerous uncertainties of electrification by offering clear and direct explanations.
"We believe this contributes significantly to the ongoing conversation about the aptness of electric vehicles for fleet usage and will assist in alleviating concerns related to decarbonizing fleets. Jason expressed his confidence that fleets will benefit from reading this valuable resource."
